Brief narrative In Edmonton, Alberta approximately two dozen homeless people were recently evicted from the vacant lot adjacent to the Bissell Centre in downtown Edmonton, without provision of alternative safe shelter or accommodation. This group was seeking safety from life on the streets and the river’s edge and also access to the available services of the Bissell Centre--washrooms, food, and counseling services--to help them survive their hunger and housing deprivation. The existing social services of the city and of the province appear to be helpless to address the immediate crisis in the lives of local citizens who are without any resources to help themselves.\r\nThe number of homeless people in Edmonton now exceeds 2000 persons, including families with children, who cannot locate housing or accommodation appropriate to their needs. For a city and a province in its current boom of economic wealth, this is an unforgiveable disparity.
