"SQUATTERS FORCED TO SLEEP IN THE OPEN"

MITHILESH YADAV
LAHAN, May 23: Disregarding the agreement between the government and the National Land Rights Forum, the District Forest Office has evicted some 150 squatter families from Taregana, Gobindapur-5, in Siraha.

Following the eviction, the squatter families have been forced to sleep in the open while it rained continuously for the last two days.

Baldev Ram, a member of the High Level Land Reform and Squatters´ Commission, expressed regrets over the forest office´s action against the past agreement. The agreement states that the squatters will be allowed to stay in their current location until a new place is arranged for their rehabilitation.

The squatters have asked for help from several human rights organizations after forest officials led by Sambhu Prasad Chaurasia, District Forest Officer, backed by Armed Police Force personnel evicted the squatters and demolished their homes four days ago.

Last year, when the Forest Office tried to evict the squatters, the latter had set fire to the ranger´s office.

Baldev Ram warned that the squatters will take their protest to a new level if action was not taken against the forest officials involved in evicting the squatters."
