Brief narrative |
NIGERIA: AKALA ORDERS DEMOLITION OF 186 HOUSES IN OYO Governor Alao Akala of Oyo State has ordered the demolition of 186 houses encroaching on public land in the ancient town of Oyo. The demolition of the affected houses situated inside the premises of Isale Oyo Community Grammar School, Oyo was carried out by a team of government officials led by the state commissioner for environment and water resources, Alhaji Majekodunmi Aborode on Thursday. Government sources had claimed that the demolition exercise had become inevitable following the expiration of a two-week notice given by Governor Alao-Akala to those who had encroached on the government land to vacate. Dated April 2, 2009, the demolition notice by the state government was pasted on the various houses slated for demolition and marked with a red paint. The notice was signed by the chairman and site engineer of the Oyo State Urban and Regional Planning Board (OYSURPB) process, just as he described the action as mere political vendetta` Ayankojo who confirmed that some buildings erected within the disputed school area actually encroached on the government land, however singled out his daughter`s building and others within the school premises as being legal. //Article found at: http://allafrica.com/stories/200904200487.html | ||||||||
