Brief narrative |
BMW squatters demand basic needs Fri, 09/26/2008 10:58 AM | City JAKARTA: The squatters who persist in occupying the Clean, Humane and Dignified (BMW) park in North Jakarta demanded the city administration treat them humanely in a protest rally at City Hall on Thursday. The city administration cleared the park Aug. 24, evicting thousands of families who had lived there for years. Of the 4,860 families, 400 families refused to leave. They have been living in makeshift shelters since their more permanent dwellings were razed. One squatter, Rasdullah, said many of them, especially the children, were suffering from water-borne illnesses such as dengue fever and malaria. "We`ve been living in tents. It`s cold when it rains and hot during the day. We are asking for mosquito netting and pillows," he said. North Jakarta Mayor Effendi Anas said he would send health officials to the site. However, he added, any squatter who had contracted dengue fever could get free health care from any city hospital. "Why do they insist on living in the park? We have provided low-cost apartments for squatters with Jakarta identity cards. We still intend to clear up the area after Idul Fitri and build a fence around it." – Jakarta Post | ||||||||
