Brief narrative

Myanmar (Burma): Report highlights new displacements in eastern BurmaViolations of international humanitarian law continue against internally displaced communities in eastern Burma, according to a recent report by the Thailand Burmese Border Consortium. The report found that approximately 76,000 people were forced to leave their homes as a result of, or in order to avoid, the effects of armed conflict and human rights abuses during the past year. The report estimates the total number of internally displaced people in eastern Burma to be at least half a million, including 295,000 people currently in temporary settlements in ceasefire areas administered by ethnic nationalities, an estimated 99,000 civilians in hiding from the Burmese army, and around 109,000 evicted villagers living in designated relocation sites.See also: IDMC Myanmar/Burma country pagehttp://www.internal-displacement.org/8025708F004D31AA/(httpIDPNewsAlerts)/C4824C8A192D51AEC125737F005A1D4A?OpenDocument#anchor3
