By 20:30 GMT Sunday evening, the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, between Israel and the “Islamic Jihad” movement under Egyptian sponsorship, entered into force.
The escalation, which lasted for 3 days, resulted in loss of life, property, homes and agricultural lands in the Strip.
Over the course of the three days, the Israeli army launched raids on the Gaza Strip, as part of a military operation that it started on Friday afternoon, against targets it said were affiliated with the Islamic Jihad movement.
Israel began this operation, by assassinating the commander in the Al-Quds Brigades, Taysir Al-Jabari, who was in an apartment inside a tower in Gaza City, which included apartments and the headquarters of media and civil institutions.
Also during that operation, the Israeli army assassinated on Saturday evening, the commander of southern Gaza in the Al-Quds Brigades, the military arm of the Islamic Jihad movement, Khaled Mansour, after targeting a house in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
The Israeli operation killed 43 Palestinians, including 15 children and 4 women, while the number of injuries as a result of the raids reached 311, with various injuries.
On the other hand, the “Al-Quds Brigades”, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad movement, fired hundreds of rocket-propelled grenades at Israeli sites adjacent to the Strip.
The Government Information Office (run by Hamas) in the Gaza Strip said that “the Israeli aggression caused damage to approximately 1,500 housing units, 16 of which were completely destroyed, 71 units became uninhabitable, and 1,400 units were partially damaged, ranging between severe and moderate.”
He added, “The aggression caused damage to dozens of acres of agricultural land, and stopped the power plant.”
Earlier on Sunday, a leader of the Palestinian “Islamic Jihad” announced that a ceasefire had been reached with Israel in Gaza.
Daoud Shehab, a spokesman for the movement, said in an exclusive statement to Anadolu Agency: “With Egyptian mediation, a ceasefire was reached, which will enter into force at eleven thirty in Palestine time.”
He added: “The agreement came after Egypt promised to work on releasing the hunger striker Khalil Awawdeh and the prisoner Bassam Al-Saadi,” before the movement confirmed in a statement the ceasefire.
On Sunday evening, Egypt had called, in a statement by an official source, quoted by the official news agency, for a comprehensive and reciprocal ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, starting at 20:30 GMT, “as part of its keenness to end the state of tension in the Strip.”
