Brief narrative

According to the Tsunami Recovery Status Report (UNORC, December 2005) the December 26, 2004 tsunami displaced estimated 504 518 people in the Indonesia province of Aceh and 385 256 in province of Nias. Source: Indonesia Tsunami Status Recovery Report http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/RWB.NSF/db900SID/RMOI-6K48VN?OpenDocument The report Tsunami Response: A Human Rights Assessment), describes violations of housing rights of the tsunami-affected populations, including those in Indonesia. For example, the Indonesian government have failed to provide land for permanent housing or provide compensation for lost land; renters were left out of construction programmes. Temporary shelters were inadequate sometimes requiring more than one family to live together and not providing water at the sites. The location of shelters and lack of water facilities jeopardized the physical security of women. Full report is attached.
