Brief narrative

In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, over 55,000 people were displaced by the December 26, 2004 tsunami and over 10,000 homes were damaged.

Major concerns have been raised about post-tsunami aid and rehabilitation work. These concerns include the inadequate housing conditions and a lack of priority to permanent housing. Intermediate shelters have been inadequate in providing necessary privacy and essential services for inhabitants. Consultation with survivors about both intermediate and permanent housing has been minimal. The lack of consultation is of greater concern because of the distance of the Islands from mainland India and limited knowledge of the central government of local geographic, cultural, and social conditions.

There are also concerns about compensation for special groups such as illegal settlers and renters who did not have land title. Relief and rehabilitation work, including the construction of temporary shelters, has not adequately considered the needs of women.
