State
Brief narrative A year earlier [1999], soldiers of the Nigerian army on a reprisal attack had killed about 2,483 people of Odi town in Bayelsa State. The town was home to about 50,000 inhabitants. All the houses in the town were razed to the ground and set ablaze. The survivors scampered to the bush and were turned into refugees in the neighboring towns. The invading army raped many of the women and young girls. Till date, no compensation has been paid to the victims, neither have the destroyed houses been rebuilt. Government has not apologized. It has given no guarantee of nonrepitition.
