"Tension up in Parañaque demolition - report"
04/01/2009 | 12:07 PM

"MANILA, Philippines – Tension erupted in a slum area with 150 shanties in Parañaque City during a demolition operation by the city government on Wednesday morning.

A radio report said that residents started facing off with government personnel when the latter started tearing down homes in Barangay (village) San Antonio Valley 1.

Labor group Partido Manggagawa said the city government cannot bring down the houses in the said village without offering a place of resettlement. The group had been assisting residents in the area.

The labor group appealed to Parañaque City Mayor Florencio “Jun" Bernabe to step in and help settle the matter.

The demolition team – led by Sheriff Reynaldo Nepomuceno – carried out the demolition by virtue of a court order from Judge Donato de Castro of the Parañaque City Regional Trial Court Branch 77. - Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV"
